Am I really anonymous?
Yes, to Rally-Tally you are. We collect no personal data, have no user accounts, and require no logins. As far as the app is concerned, you're just a blue dot on the map.
NOTE: Google and Apple do know who you are, if you subscribe to the app, since they manage payments. They will know you have purchased the app, but they will never know if you have attended events or not.
How do you ensure checkin counts are accurate without knowing who the user is?
When you install the app, it creates a random, unique ID code for your phone. That's what we store on our database. When you check in, that ID is added to the event data and counted in the total; if you check out, it's removed. No names, no personal info. We don't even know what type of phone is used. All we know is a phone has checked in, or out.
What type of events do you allow when registering a new event?
Any type. Rally-Tally was originally created with protests in mind. However we also support celebrations (like street parties), memorials, inaugurations, public sport (such as the Tour De France) and festivals. Pretty much any free, non-ticketed event. Want another type added to the options list? Email us and we'll make it happen.
Why can't I check in to an event?
First, make sure location permissions are enabled on your device.
Physical check-in: You must be within 500m of the event start location, end location, or any waypoint, on the correct date, from the event start time until it ends.
Virtual check-in: You can check in anytime, from any location, on any date, until the event ends.
If the event is over, you can't change your check in status (check in or check out).
Why does the app need to know my phone location?
The app needs to know your phone location so that it can:
- show the closest events to you on the home screen
- determine if you are close enough to an event to let you physically check in
Note: Whilst the app uses your device location, this data is never sent to our servers. So we do not know where you are, or where you have been.
How do I edit an event I added? Or delete it?
You need to be subscribed to add events. When you create and save an event, you'll see a pop-up confirming it's saved and showing your "editPassword". You need to record this somewhere, if you want edit/delete permissions later. Note: If you use rude/offensive words within your new event, it will be rejected.
To edit or delete:
Menu → View All Events → find your event → tap it → scroll down → tap Edit → enter your editPassword → make changes → tap Update Rally-Tally Event (or Delete Rally-Tally Event).

What are your tips for getting the most out of the app?
Turn on location services before arriving at an event.
Physically check-in early on so you're counted. If you do not have internet services, the app will store your check-in and send it once you have internet access. BUT if you do not get internet access until after the event has ended, then your check-in will be rejected.
Use virtual check-in to support events you can't attend.
Add missing events so others can be counted too, but make sure it is not already in the app. Adding a new event that is too similar to a current event will be rejected. The app will show you the events that are too similar first.
What if I lose my event "editPassword"?
Rally-Tally does not know who our users are, and therefore who created events. If you lose your event editPassword and want us to edit/delete your event, we cannot do this. We cannot know if it was really you who created it. So do not lose your event editPassword!
How can we help Rally-Tally?
Tell your friends, family, and fellow event participants about Rally-Tally!
Physically check-in to the events you are passionate about, and virtually check-in to the events you support but cannot attend.
Subscribe, which helps us cover the cost of data transfers and storage.
Be counted!
What are the restrictions of the free tier of the Rally-Tally app?
The free version of the app is restricted to:
- 2 physical check-ins
- 5 virtual check-ins
- No new event registrations
To remove these restrictions, please subscribe.
My event has been deleted or modified. What happened?
We reserve the right to remove or modify events that contain rude words, offensive content, or are duplicates of existing events.
I lost my phone, what happens to my subscription and check ins?
Your subscription is tied to your Google or Apple account. We do not know who you are, but they do. So if you lose your phone, and then use the same Google or Apple account on the new phone, your subscription will be re-enabled on the new device. To force this, in the app go to Menu → Subscribe → Restore Purchases.
However, since we do not know who you are, your old check ins will not be visible on the new phone, and there is no way to recover them. When you install our app on your new phone, it will be allocated a new unique ID code, different to the previous phone. There is no way to link them, if we want to ensure our users are anonymous. The good news is that your previous check ins will still be in the check in totals for the events you checked into, physically or virtually, so at least your attendance has counted.
